Old paint on concrete driveways, paths, and patios is one of the most common preparation challenges in resurfacing projects. Black bitumen-based products were commonly applied to driveways in the 1970s, 1990s as a cheap sealer. They appear as a black or dark brown coating, often peeling in summer heat (bitumen becomes soft above 50°C, which it regularly reaches in Port Stephens summer).
Removal approach: Bitumen-modified products are particularly difficult to remove because they have a broad, variable temperature response and do not grind cleanly. Options:

After Removal: Surface Profile and Cleanliness Requirements
After all paint and stains are removed, the surface must meet these requirements before any overlay or sealer:
- CSP 2-4 profile: Slightly rough surface with open pores (like coarse sandpaper), not smooth, not too rough
- No contaminants: No oil, no chemical residue, no dust
- Dry: Below the moisture content threshold for the selected product (check product data sheet; typically <4% moisture)
- Structurally sound: No hollow-sounding areas, no delamination, cracks filled

Can I apply a new sealer or overlay over concrete that has had old paint mostly ground off but still has traces? No. Even trace amounts of old paint prevent reliable adhesion. Grinding must achieve bare concrete across the entire surface. Isolated small areas where paint residue is deeply embedded can sometimes be treated with a bonding primer that tolerates minor contamination, discuss this with your contractor.
Is it possible to chemically strip paint without grinding at all? For some paint types and in some situations, chemical stripping followed by high-pressure washing can leave a surface ready for overlay, without grinding.
