Micro-Topping Concrete Floors: What Is It and Where Does It Work?

Micro-topping, also called micro-cement, skim coat, or thin-finish overlay, has become one of the most sought-after interior floor finishes in the Australian market over the past decade. Permanently exposed outdoor surfaces

Over substrates with active moisture issues

  4. Sanding between coats, fine sanding to remove any high spots or trowel ridges
  5. Second coat, colour consistency and surface refinement; skilled trowel work determines final appearance
  6. Sealing, penetrating or film-forming sealer depending on application; multiple coats typically required

Total thickness is typically 2-3 mm over two coats. The slab and substrate must be at the correct temperature and humidity for the duration of application and initial curing.


Sealer selection for micro-topping

The sealer is as important as the micro-topping itself. Options:

  • Penetrating impregnating sealer: Preserves the natural matte look while providing stain and moisture resistance. Requires reapplication every 1-3 years.
  • Film-forming polyurethane: Adds a slight sheen; provides better stain and abrasion protection; lasts 3-5 years before recoating. Appropriate for kitchens and commercial floors.
  • Hardener + sealer combination: For commercial applications requiring maximum hardness.

FAQs

Is micro-topping the same as polished concrete?

No. Polished concrete is ground and buffed from an existing concrete slab, it doesn’t add thickness, it reveals and refines the existing material. Micro-topping is an applied layer over the existing substrate. They produce a somewhat similar aesthetic but are entirely different processes. Polished concrete requires a concrete substrate with adequate quality and aggregate composition; micro-topping can be applied over tiles, screed, or any sound, prepared substrate.

Can micro-topping be applied over existing tiles without removing them?

Yes, this is one of its primary renovation advantages. Provided the tiles are firmly adhered (not hollow), the grout lines are filled flush, and the surface is properly primed, micro-topping can be applied directly over existing tiles. The 2-3 mm thickness bridges grout lines without telegraphing them. This avoids the cost and disruption of tile removal.

How much does micro-topping cost compared to tiling in Port Stephens?
