Concrete Grinding: When It's the Right First Step

Concrete grinding is one of those processes that sounds straightforward but is applied in several different contexts, as a standalone service, as preparation for resurfacing, and as a method of removing high spots or existing coatings. Understanding when grinding is the right intervention for your specific problem helps you commission the right service and avoid paying for work that doesn’t match your actual need.

What concrete grinding actually does

A diamond grinding machine uses rotating heads fitted with diamond segments to abrade the concrete surface. Key variables:

  • Diamond grit/grade, coarser grit removes material faster; finer grit produces a smoother finish

  • Removes the weak surface laitance layer (the fine paste that bleeds to the surface during placement and is softer than the substrate)

When grinding is NOT the right step

When the slab has significant structural issues

Grinding addresses surface issues. It does not fix cracked structural sections, subsidence, or voiding beneath a slab. Attempting to grind over a slab that has active movement or structural failure simply creates a freshly ground surface on a failing substrate. Structural assessment must precede grinding when there are signs of movement.

When the surface is too thin to grind

Some slabs, particularly very old ones or those that have been ground before, have limited thickness to remove. Grinding too deeply can expose aggregate at an inconsistent level or reach the reinforcement zone. A contractor should assess slab thickness before specifying aggressive grinding.

When the goal is purely cosmetic cleaning

If the concrete is in good condition and simply needs cleaning, no overlay, no coating, no profile required, pressure washing with appropriate detergents is more appropriate than grinding. Grinding a clean, sound surface that doesn’t need profiling removes material unnecessarily.
